CORYELL COUNTY - CPS has removed two children from a Coryell County couple after a bizarre series of events that landed the couple behind bars.
The incident began Friday night on Highway 84 near Oglesby when a Coryell County Sheriff's deputy happened upon people standing by a pickup on the side of the road. The deputy stopped to see if they needed help, only to discover three children and two "very intoxicated" adults.
The deputy was unable to charge either adult with DWI since he could not place either the man or woman behind the wheel of the truck. So, he instructed the drunken pair to call someone for a ride, lock the truck and pick it up when they were sober.
When the group's ride arrived, the deputy, assured all was taken care of, drove off only to see the pickup come up from behind and pass him with the intoxicated woman driving. He immediately initiated a traffic stop and took the couple into custody. Two of the children were with the couple and the third was riding with what was supposed to be the whole family's ride.
The deputy arrested 24-year-old Jami Lynn Retherford and 30-year-old Larry Wayne Simpson.
Retherford is being held in lieu of $20,000 bond for charges of Driving while intoxicated (third or more offense), endangering a child and criminal negligence.
Simpson's bond has been set at $11,000 for charges of abandoning or endangering a child, criminal negligence and criminal mischief.
CPS has since placed the two children the deputy found riding with the couple with family members
